HELCOM Workshop on nutrient recycling measures

13 February, 2020 - 15:11

The HELCOM Workshop on nutrient recycling measures was organized in Helsinki on 5–6 February 2020, attended by ca. 40 experts on wastewater and agriculture. The workshop aimed to outline possible measures that could increase recycling of nutrients in the Baltic Sea Region (both in the agricultural and wastewater sector), achieve the agreed objectives of the strategy and be included in the updated Baltic Sea Action Plan.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Finland, HELCOM, European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region Policy Area Nutri and Bioeconomy as well as SuMaNu and BSR WATER project platforms. Our platform was represented by Taavo Tenno (University of Tartu) presenting "Measures for efficient use of nutrients and cost-effective nutrient recycling in waste water sector".

The workshop was organized in the framework of elaborating a Baltic Sea Regional Nutrient Recycling Strategy by 2020, which objective is to reduce nutrient inputs to and eutrophication of the Baltic Sea. BSR WATER platform contributes to this process by collecting information on the most advanced and efficient solutions in the Baltic Sea Region to recycle nutrients from wastewater.
